about

This version of Cabochon, was the version that was the first Wide-Eyed song to be played on the radio (3/22/2005 on WCBN Ann Arbor). The band happened to be listening at the time, so this version recalls that moment in time for them, personally.

Cabochon was one of the many songs written during the LUCK sessions time period, and briefly was considered to be included, but like many other songs written during that time period, it was set aside for "the next album", but finally found its place on Aurora.

There are other songs, where I have mentioned that Tina believed in the song, and helped to keep it from being retired permanently, well, this is the same situation in reverse. This song was one that Tina wanted to retire, and I persuaded her to keep the song alive.
After it was played on the radio, I think it remained in more of a "safe" territory, as being a song to not retire. Those stories of her "saving" the Patrick tunes from oblivion, are more well known, but it was a two-way flow, in a few cases.

The final, "complete" version of the song appears on the album Aurora

lyrics

Cabochon
========

The circles within circles
Life millions of year before
Seas weakened into shore
Organisms turned to stone

The pattern was
Spinning around
Swirling around
Cemented down

Force, press, down;
Heat. constrict
Pressurized from the weight
Mass evolves into design
See how the opalescent hue shines
See how it shines

The pattern is
Spinning around
Swirling around
It's been cemented down

about

Wide-Eyed Ypsilanti, Michigan

Formed in the beginning of 2001, Wide-Eyed is Tina Lambright and Patrick Pyne. Despite being a duo, they rotated instruments for recordings to make full, band-oriented songs of varying sounds and styles. Their music can be generally described as experimental pop, or psychedelic rock, but avoiding cliches of any genre. Serious, funny, abstract or direct, despite the dressing, enjoyment is the focus ... more
