about

This is the opening track to the album "maven"

We wrote it in April 2003, as the LUCK album was going through its final months of polishing touches.
Everything is pretty obvious with this song, the basic idea being about this character who has led an insulated life, yet has this desire to hear and make "noise", and in the end, has a life changing moment when, as the lyrics say, "he heard music".

The basic sound and approach was just to write a song that "rocked" harder than any of the songs on LUCK (as we had, admittedly, a just a touch of dissatisfaction with the absence of something that completely unleashed), so on this song, we wanted to let loose.

Sonic Youth and The Pixies are the obvious primary influences here, but also the absolute freakout release that Thom Yorke would get, as his head flops around like a bobblehead, during some mid-era Radiohead performances, was a feel we tried to capture in the energy and rhythm, though definitely a lot more self-mocking and simple, than anything that could be described as "art rock", by any measure.

The "Ms. Python" ending was an improvisation that was kept, further detracting from any/all pretension, in its silliness, obviously referencing the silliness of Monty Python's Flying CIrcus' Terry Jones, especially.

lyrics

Commotion
==========

There was a young lad
Lived with his mom and dad

You wanna hear noise you know you really want to
You gotta hear noise you know you really want to
You wanna hear noise you know you really got to
You gotta hear noise you know you really got to

He knew a lot about a small space
He had noise come slap him in the face
So he did not know time or place

Got to
Want to

You wanna make noise you know you really want to
You gotta make noise you know you really want to
You wanna make noise you know you really got to
You gotta make noise you know you really got to

He
Heard
Music

(Ms. Python: "Why do you kids always have to make such a commotion?")

Formed in the beginning of 2001, Wide-Eyed is Tina Lambright and Patrick Pyne. Despite being a duo, they rotated instruments for recordings to make full, band-oriented songs of varying sounds and styles. Their music can be generally described as experimental pop, or psychedelic rock, but avoiding cliches of any genre. Serious, funny, abstract or direct, despite the dressing, enjoyment is the focus ... more
