Love Bug 04:42
Love Bug ======= We speak with our lights Early on summer nights Sounding out the magic code Illuminating attraction ode, Spinning around and around More and more tightly wound Could you come and dance with me? Hovering under leaves and trees Flying over the browns and greens Only each other's eyes we see On these warm evenings we dance Playing games of love and chance Swirlling we move together We have our moment, not forever We never, ever make a sound Is this love we have found? We each find a path, then we meet Wavering between grass and leaves Flashing with the desire to be seen Hidden kiss under the trees Such a random intersection If you happen to see the attraction -the attraction Spinning around and around More and more tightly wound We never, ever make a sound Is this loves we have found? Only each other do we see Floating in the spaces between Hovering on the edge of dreams Won't you come and dance with me? Won't you come and dance with me?

Sweet Decay 03:41
Sweet Decay ========== What is the dirt that covers the land? Organic decay mingling with sand Standing on the surface that's barely crusted Magically, majestically maladjusted Flashbacks that flash-forward instead Looking around and listening To the thoughts inside their heads Lie outside, assume we're all inbred Worldwide bloodspill Global Nazi landfill A summer snowfall The smell and taste of The scentless, tasteless fallout The sweet flavor in doubt Find a drink in the pan-drought If you run, will it pan out? Or is it the same, if you just stand out, And wait For the darkness to come Complete eclipse of the sun The world quickly dims and fades Did it really have to end this way?
3.
Should Have Known It Was Dead ========================== Empty spaces Void of faces Wouldn't you know Out of all the places It would be here Should have known it was dead Cracks in the streets Nobody speaks There's no sound, no music, No feel, no beat Definitely not here Should have known it was dead Broken glass It's in the past It'd be better if you just didn't ask What happened here? Should have known it was dead
4.
No Creature Feature ================ No feature Will be shown tonight No creature Will come from the ocean now No story tonight is told Of the smart, lucky and bold No cities destroyed Projector unemployed No costume Can hide the beast inside But volume Can drown out their ugly sound No teacher Will be shown what's right No preacher Will be thrown to the ocean now What's seen as an image Has something underneath Will the scene be taken From right beneath your feet? .

Negative Wow 03:02
Negative Wow =========== Can't find the words Buried in the dirt Wow Can't find my mind Lost for all time Wow
6.
Shaggy 03:02
Shaggy ====== The way your face is looking saggy Reminds me of something raggedy Like a doll, but your eyes are baggy Keepin' time, but the beats are draggy Still you're not concerned With the way your candle burns To the middle from both ends Do you consider yourself your friend? You've got a dog, but her name is Maggie So tell me why they call you "Shaggy" Playing with time, but the beats are draggy Is it because of that fat, little baggie? The slow motion turns A gradual burn What's coming 'round the bend? - It could be the end.
7.
Jetstream 05:28
Jetstream ======= Flowing with a pulse Trailing out behind It's the mainstream That creates the ripples Caused by the rush Running in a daydream It disappears... It disappears... The exhaust forms Concentric circles Will you get out? Beyond the smokescreen What comes into focus Is the thing you are without Nothing in the mirror... Nothing in the mirror... With the Jetset Do you try to keep up And wind yourself up in the spin___ Now the Jetstream Fades to thin air You're able To see right in You see nothing appears... You see nothing appears__ .

Minty 01:55

The Island 05:36
The Island ========= I'm on an island What brought me to this place? I'm on an island The lines cannot be traced - the trip - I'm on an island An ocean surrounds my island I'm on an island
10.
Water Boiled 05:17
Water Boiled ========== The air I breathe Is poison to me But still i breathe all the same An endless search For life on Earth Wishing it was just a game Lots of sound But no one around Children's rhymes Seem to pass the time Bored depression Is hard to beat I drink my water boiled Even that is spoiled let alone everything I eat It's hard to relax Waiting on surprise attacks Emotions like wax I start seeing the cracks Far past logic and facts Still I've gotta watch my back Lots of sound but no one around I don't know about A thousand years from now Or a hundred or even just one When things go this way It's a welcome day When the Earth gets swallowed by the sun
11.
Icemaker 02:27
Icemaker ======= The Icemaker who saved the world Made ice for his girl He made his own sacrifice He gave his life makin' ice He made ice for the world The Icemaker who saved the world He made a great giant fridge And took it out to the ridge (he) Made a polar cap To stop that greenhouse trap He was lazy in his former life Except when it came to makin' ice He made ice for the world The Icemaker who saved the world Made ice for his friends The frozen delights never end A vision hit him once or twice He saw the answer while makin' ice The Icemaker who saved the world Made ice for his girl Only wanted to make some ice Dependent on a sacrifice Only want to make ice For what it's worth, he saved the Earth

World Of Dust's tabla beat pattern, is the structural and rhythmic spine to the song. The basic cycle, is an ascending pattern, each bar containing from 1 to 13 beats (in reverse, for the last 3 cycles of the song, after the "hinge"). And yes, obviously the number 13 had many positive connections to Wide-Eyed as a group, and us individually, so naturally, i focused on that number for my sole contribution to the great and ancient music of India. As mentioned in the "notes", this was the song i was working on, when Tina proposed the idea of the band to me, so 13 was an aspect from the outset (not to mention our band's address of 1339 (39 being 13x3, of course) Apt. 13 (shown on LUCK's back cover) I wanted to capture a consistent feel, yet have the song open up on further examination, including the palindromic nature of each individual cycle, as well as the more obvious symmetry of the song as a whole. In my mind, i visualized the pattern as sort of an audio mandala (though to say that sounds pretentious, it originated from an innocent, personal exercise for my own practice, and recording; i didn't set out to "add my 2 cents" to Indian music). Each beat #1 should be stressed. As the beats are counted out, all have equal time value, and are in consistent tempo. Tabla pattern in visual symmetry: 1 12 123 12-12 123 12 123-123 12-12 123 12-12-12-12 123-123-123 1 123-123-123 12-12-12-12 123 12-12 123-123 12 123 12-12 123 12 1 Pattern broken down numerically: (1): 1 (2): 12 (3): 123 (4): 12-12 (5): 123-12 (6): 123-123 (7): 12-12-123 (8): 12-12-12-12 (9): 123-123-123 (10): 1-123-123-123 (11): 12-12-12-12-123 (12): 12-12-123-123-12 (13): 123-12-12-123-12-1

Bauls ===== Verse 1: A scream in the dark Lit by a blue moon The voices of the young Ring out but are gone in an instant The light makes white patterns On the black lawn The cotton in the grass Makes a good bed for all the bodies The silky seeds from the trees Fall like slow rain Chorus: Sing your watery song As the days grow long Verse 2: The beginning of the heat Stirs something inside Afflicted with the disease Of the wind, of the mind Cut a path through the dead branches To view the end of the day Chorus: Sing your watery song As the days grow long

about

Wide-Eyed is a band with Tina Lambright and Patrick Pyne.
Though the origins of the group go back to 1994 in Seattle, Wide-Eyed was formed at the beginning of 2001 in Ypsilanti, MI, and over the next 6 1/2 years, would record 6 albums (described below).
But first, about this collection:

Hidden From Sight is intended as an introduction to Wide-Eyed
Not a chronological hits-style collection, but more of a cross-section of the group's albums and songs.

Instead of rating songs against each other, or trying to assemble a "best of", the band chose tracks they felt work well together, some less obvious song choices than others, all to give the listener an idea of the group's personality, and a sense of what they might hear by continuing further...

"We would rather show a bit more of the variety, and leave the 'hit mining' for the listener, especially since everyone has different ideas on what they like and want to hear."

As for the Wide-Eyed discography
The songs are all available individually,
Or together in their respective albums,
OR,
if you're feeling adventurous,
They're available as a collected bundle called "Hidden From Sight"
(digital "box set" with no box)
which contains all 6 albums:
LUCK
maven
Ypsilanti Records
Aurora
Dead Fuzz
Sky Pipes (demos & oddities)
- No plea for completism, just a quantity discount, for those who are bravely taking a dive into the deep end.

Currently all of these albums are available only as digital downloads, with CDs and LPs to hopefully follow someday (though the band previously released all of the albums independently on CD).

As they recorded these albums, the band had dreams of vinyl releases, so they imagined potential LP side breaks, as well as different feel or mood for the A and B sides, so with that knowledge, hopefully your listening will be further enhanced.
"We just sequenced the songs on each album, with our own sense of flow, and taking into consideration 'side breaks' for vinyl, even if that becomes sort of invisible on the CD/digital versions of the albums"

"All of this is for fun, and additional layers of enjoyment on repeated listenings, and not being precious about any specific order. It's just how the songs are being presented, individually, and together in a sequence as albums...."
Patrick reflects,
"That said, since each song has its own thing going on, I wouldn't be surprised at all, if someone's device, while playing individual tracks on random, may result in a flow of songs the listener enjoys more."

The very desire to listen and find out, is exactly what this sampler seeks to inspire...

========

Now, a basic rundown of the 6 albums that are the source materials for this collection.
These descriptions are in broad, general terms, but can still give you a brief sense of the band's history, and what each album is about: (hey, you're reading the "information" section, so here's some info)

LUCK (2001-3)
In choosing the name Wide-Eyed, Tina and Patrick were hoping to connect ideas of psychedelia in non-cliche ways, so the band's debut was an attempt at presenting their songs cohesively, despite diversity of sound and styles; to make music that can be artistic, without "art rock" pretensions, funny without being comedy (intentionally, at least), and to "rock" without the many cliches there as well, the band's name being "against type" specifically.

"We share a distaste for describing our music, because to us, any description either sounds horribly pretentious, or just doesn't accurately describe it; the music describes itself, which to me is the opposite of pretension because it's not trying to be anything other than what it is", Patrick explains

"It's not diversity for diversity's sake, but more like just writing without the boundaries that styles create, then diversity just naturally happens when you're just trying to not repeat yourself, song to song, as engineers, producers, performers and songwriters. LUCK easily had twice as many songs in residency, at one time or another, so the stylistic spread naturally happened over time, as songs were replaced, or refined."

"The songs were initially an ever-changing set, and the demos were originally to give potential band members an idea of what they would be in for, but we became so focused on writing, practicing and recording, we remained a 2 piece, and rotated instruments for the recordings. We were just finding our way, and making it work with what we had."

"Live shows were their own thing. Most of our shows were as a 2 piece with Tina playing bass, and me on the drums. If we had a friend playing the drums, then I would play the guitar."

LUCK reflected a newness and youthfulness of the band itself, and the ideas they hoped to convey through their writing and the atypical sound of their debut album.

maven (2004)
After completing LUCK, the band began working with a large batch of tracks that didn't end up the first album. They decided to work on maven and Aurora concurrently. Desipite this, from the outset, maven was considered the 2nd album, and was thought of as more of a rock album with some weird edges to it, while...

Aurora (2006)
Would be considered to be more psychedelic, and less pop-song-oriented than maven (though both albums have aspects of each other).
Work on tracks for both albums continued, and in one very brief session, the band members decided which songs went to maven or Aurora (they intentionally remained undecided before that point), and the order of the tracks.
Even though there was this parallel timeline for the two albums, Patrick and Tina hoped Aurora would have a "next step past maven" feel to it.

Ypsilanti Records (2005)
While right in the middle of working on maven and Aurora, Fred Thomas (who played drums on a few m/A songs) approached the band with an offer to put out an album (of new songs, exclusive to this release), so Tina and Patrick took a short break, wrote and recorded 5 tracks each, all solo recordings. The result was, yet again, a different view of these two songwriters. The first 50 copies were released on Ypsianti Records, with Wide-Eyed's subsequent re-release after those were gone.

Dead Fuzz (2007)
Wide-Eyed's final album to date. After completing the marathon that resulted in the previous 4 records (5 if you count the material that made up the Sky Pipes collection, released later), the band was preparing to take a break from constant recording, when they decided to make one more album, a "quick and immediate record" in the Stooges/Sonics vein... at least that was the original intention, but Brian Wilson, and a few others, crept into the mix somewhere along the way.

Though much of the insistent drive was maintained, the album took some very different directions, and evolved into something else altogether, with soundscapes and layers, all unexpected at the outset..
Patrick points out "in retrospect, it does make a good companion bookend to LUCK, and touches on a lot of different ground before being done."

Sky Pipes (2008)
"B-Sides", unreleased tracks, and alternate versions.
In a way, this record has been a work in progress, all of its own, from the beginnings of LUCK in 2001, until the completion of Dead Fuzz in late 2007. Many songs were set aside or left behind, for many different reasons, and some of them surface here.
Sky Pipes also has different versions of released songs, like the original version of Cabochon (also included on Hidden From Sight), that was the first Wide-Eyed song to be played on the radio (WCBN), and is notably different from the final version that appeared on Aurora.
These songs and more, just to lighten the mood.

Sky Pipes was originally intended to be only included as a bonus 2CD/2LP, as a part of the physical product version of the box set, but in releasing all of the albums digitally first, they decided to just make it available along with the rest of the albums, and to sell the complete bundle for less, still retaining the bonus album idea.

All of these words, to inform
and all of this music we hope you enjoy...

Formed in the beginning of 2001, Wide-Eyed is Tina Lambright and Patrick Pyne. Despite being a duo, they rotated instruments for recordings to make full, band-oriented songs of varying sounds and styles. Their music can be generally described as experimental pop, or psychedelic rock, but avoiding cliches of any genre.
