about

Thanks to Doug Coombe for sparking an idea that evolved into this song (the "Wow" he gave, when confronted with someone else's absurdity)

Patrick tells the story of the sound of this song:
This song (sound-wise) was sort of an homage to the band My Bloody Valentine, and was initially even much moreso.

As i was doing research for this commentary, I found in the studio notes (and also recall) that i initially recorded a guitar track, where I used the tremolo arm while strumming, and no phasing/flanging effects. This actually gave the song TOO MUCH of a MBV sound and feel, and sounded like we were just imitating them, as opposed to just a "nod" to this group we both love and admire.

I recorded a much more "straight" sounding guitar, more overdriven, and less (and more subtle) tremolo arm use. I also hand manipulated some of the shifting effects, and made Tina's vocal be more audible, both of which helped to distinguish this song as its own thing, and more distantly echoing the MBV influence.

Despite being a duo, they rotated instruments for recordings to make full, band-oriented songs of varying sounds and styles. Their music can be generally described as experimental pop, or psychedelic rock, but avoiding cliches of any genre. Serious, funny, abstract or direct, despite the dressing, enjoyment is the focus ... more
