about

Originally assembled for Wide-Eyed's (old) MySpace page.

At the time, the band was nearing completion of both maven and Aurora albums, so, with about 50 songs / 4 albums, they wanted to do a track that introduced the band, and a good number of their songs, but they didn't want to do it in an obvious, commercial sounding, straight blips of songs crossfaded to the next, "one at a time, single file please" kind of way.
So the Nemo-style sound collage was the route they chose, and this track was the result.

"Of course I wanted this track to show some of the band's better moments, but i also wanted it to be its own thing, by working the parts of the different songs against each other.
No saddle, get up and ride, and stay on the beast for 8 minutes.
I'm only half kidding, i did my best to work things out, despite some thick, shifting harmonies and rhythms along the way; even if it's murky, i still wanted it to "work" within itself.
I was also hoping to give details to the layers (not just "mud"), for enjoyment on repeated listens (though i'm sure many people won't even be able to make it through one play). I wanted it to be fun for people who know the songs, too, so you hear familiar things in an unfamiliar way."
Sez Nemo,
"We joked that it was all at once, showing many of the 'best' moments, to attract an audience, while at the same time, maybe also scaring away some of that same audience, and definitely takes to task, the impatient, the unadventurous, or those unable to wade through the 8 minutes of sonic molasses."

If you make it through this track, you've waded through some of the murkiest waters this band has.

It remains to be seen, if this specific track is a very useful promotional tool, as far as capturing the interest of people who would probably like Wide-Eyed's music...
but as a fun psychedelic meltdown romp through the first four albums, it's a nice "bonus track" addition, and maybe more fun to wade through this "sonic molasses", when you know the songs.

Nemo adds:
"This song should have a warning label on it!
We went with the Hunter S. Thompson axiom of 'buy the ticket, take the ride', and wanted to give the listener a nice little 8 minute ride"

Wide-Eyed Ypsilanti, Michigan

Formed in the beginning of 2001, Wide-Eyed is Tina Lambright and Patrick Pyne. Despite being a duo, they rotated instruments for recordings to make full, band-oriented songs of varying sounds and styles. Their music can be generally described as experimental pop, or psychedelic rock, but avoiding cliches of any genre. Serious, funny, abstract or direct, despite the dressing, enjoyment is the focus ... more
